About Doctor Who In Detail 4 |
After being online for five years, and looking the same for all five years Doctor Who In Detail 3 is slowly being superceeded by the new Doctor Who In Detail 4. Although recognisable, Doctor Who In Detail 4 is a very differemt site, with each page being reconstructed from new.
DWID 3 is essentially a collection of static pages, which is not disimilar from DWID 4. However, DWID 4 is also a home developed Java application that stores all the information in a MySQL database, so changes can now be made easier. The information is then displayed as a HTML page by transforming XML files using XSL.
DWID 4 has a lot more reliance on Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to alter the display of the site. In future, if ever the overall look of the site needs to change all that is needed is a change in the stylesheets. This does mean, however, that older browsers may not be able to display the site properly. Although every effort has been made to ensure this looks the same, and as intended, in all browsers, I have only been able to test using Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 7 and Opera 7 on Windows XP.
Due to web server space restriction some parts of DWID 3 may disappear; these will be replaced with the same section in DWID 4.
In an attempt to conserve space, and cut down on download time, the HTML pages and stylesheets have been compressed using a small home developer Java application and many of the graphics have been compressed, or withdrawn completely.
