On the surface Zanak appears as a pleasant planet with green fields and friendly natives. However, the planet holds a deadly secret. Under the control of a half-man, half-machine known as the Captain, the planet can dematerialise from one location, and re-materialise in another, in a similar fashion to the TARDIS.
The purpose is far more sinister; Zanak is a parasite. It can materialise around a planet and literally suck out the life and energy, leaving behind the remains of a crushed planet.
The fourth Doctor and Romana visited Zanak when they were trying to materialise on the planet Calufrax . They found that Zanak had materialised around Calufrax, and was in the process of extracting the minerals.
