Vanir

The Vanir were drug-dependent custodians of the Terminus Incorporated ship. They were charged with the care and cure of Lazars. The cure for Lazar disease was a high dose of radiation. They used the Garm to take the infected people into a radioactive section of the Terminus ship.

Over time the Vanir had become infected with radiation, and the only reason they continued to work for Terminus was for hyrdromel they were dependent on.

When the fifth Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Turlough visited Terminus, Nyssa became infected with Lazars disease. For most people the cure didn't work, although it was sufficient to cure Nyssa. She realised that the cure could be made to work, and that by synthesizing the hydromel she was able to free the Vanir from the control of Terminus.
