Mutant Scientists

Mawdryn was the leader of a group of scientists who were aiming for immortality. They stole a Metamorphic Symbiosys Regenerator from Gallifrey. They achieved immoratility but at a severe price: an element of perpetual mutation was introduced, and their bodies continued to renew themselves into a mutated form of their previous selves.

Their ship was caught in a warp ellipse. Every 75 years the craft would come within transmat range of Earth. Mawdryn managed to reach Earth, where Tegan and Nyssa mistakenly took him for a regenerated Doctor.

The only way for the scientists to end their lives would be for the Doctor to sacrifice his remaining regenerations. This would end the lives of Mawdryn and the scientists, but leave the Doctor unable to regenerate.

The Doctor agreed, but it was the meeting of two Brigadiers from different timestreams met, the energy came from the shorting of the time differential. The Doctor was still able to regenerate, and the scientists were finally able to die.
