The Mara is an entity which feeds on evil. The Sumarans created a Great Crystal which could amplify the mind and allowed the mental energy to take a physical form. The crystal amplified the evil in the Sumarans' minds, and the mental energy took on the physical form of the Mara, which in turn destroyed the Sumarans.
When the Federation came to the planet Manussa they banished the Mara to the dark places of the inside. On the planet Deva Loka the Mara managed to cross over from another dimension using Tegan's dreams. The fifth Doctor managed to banish the Mara using a ring of mirrors which repelled the evil inside Tegan.
On Manussa the Mara attempted, with a little success, to gain control of Tegan once again. The fifth Doctor managed to destroy, instead of just banish, the Mara as it attempted to gain physical form via the Great Crystal.
