The Malus arrived on Earth in a probe from the planet Hakol, long before the year 1643. The Malus was an alien entity which fed off the fear of the locals who were involved in the Civil War when it came to Little Hodcombe. The Malus was capable of creating psychic projections which were used to inestify the fear of the locals.
The fifth Doctor, Turlough and Tegan visited Little Hodcombe in 1984 to visit Tegan's grandfather. They
soon became involved in the local wargames, a recreation of the events of 1643. The Malus fed off the
psychic energy generated by the events, and took over the mind of the leader, Sir George Hutchinson.
The Malus had been a living entity re-engineered as an instrument of war and sent to Earth as part of an invasion force, an invasion which never took place.
The Doctor managed to use the TARDIS to isolate the Malus from the events in the village. The only source of energy for the Malus was Sir Georhe Hutchinson. Hutchinson was killed when he was pushed into the Malus. Realising it had lost the Malus obeyed the last part of it's instructions, and destroyed whatever it could.
