Guardians of Time

The Guardians were powerful enities that controlled the balance of the Universe. There are two Guardians - the White Guardian controls the light and order of the Universe. The Black Guardian controls the darkness and chaos of the Unvierse. The power of each Guardian gives an indication of the state of the Universe. For the most part there is evil, hence the Black Guardian appears as the most powerful.

The White Guardian enlisted the help of the fourth Doctor, and a new companion Romana, to retrieve the six segments of the Key to Time and to reassemble the key. The Black Guardian attempted to stop the Doctor, but failed.

Later, the Black Guardian used Turlough to kill the Doctor. Turlough realised that he could not go through with the task. The White Guardian released Turlough from his contract with the Black Guardian.

Although the Guardians can use other beings to accomplish tasks, they cannot be seen to activeness themselves.
